Pinot Noir is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.  The 2009 season offered exceptional Pinot Noir grapes in the cooler climate of the Elgin region, resulting in Spier Cellar Master Frans Smit deciding to make a Pinot Noir wine for the first time in Spier’s history. 

According to Frans, the best site was selected for the most optimal expression of this sensitive variety's true potential, and the resulting wine is a great expression of terroir. “The wine has beautiful pomegranate flavours with hints of strawberries and caramel. It has a wonderful balance of berryfruit and subtle smooth tannins.  It is a rich and complex wine with a long clean finish.”

The wine will be sold in the Spier Vintage Selection range, which features wines that reflect the best a particular season has to offer.  It will not necessarily be produced again in future vintages, and only a limited volume will be available for sale, exclusively through the Spier wine shop.
